WALKING WITH WALKER
Astonishing 4-day walking breaks in the Welsh countryside
Here is your opportunity to explore the delights of the Welsh countryside in the company of experienced, enthusiastic and knowledgable professionals. You can join us for one or more days during a longer visit to the area, or you can come specifically for the break.
In overall charge, and leading the vast majority of the walks, Kevin Walker has over thirty years experience of tramping the Welsh hills, and has an undying passion for discovering the history, heritage, and hidden gems of this most scenic of areas. Well known in the outdoor business, he has appeared on television and radio, and is the author of many books, his most recent being Undiscovered Wales, a walking guide with attitude! He also writes and publishes local guide books and route cards under the banner of Heritage Guides, and regularly writes for the outdoor press, particularly TGO magazine. Walking with Kevin is never mere trudging! Whatever route you take, he will bring the landscape to life with stories and reminiscences that will make you look at your surroundings in a new light.
Enjoy and remember...
There are walks here for everyone! No matter what your level of fitness or ability, Kevin will not only choose a walk that is right for you and the prevailing weather conditions, but will also bring it to life with tales and folklore and an infectious enthusiasm for the local countryside.
Where will we go?
That largely depends on the weather, but there are countless options including...
- Gentle strolls alongside a tranquil canal, or fascinating forays through deep wooded gorges full of hidden waterfalls and rushing torrents...
- High-level mountain circuits around the central Brecon Beacons - the highest mountains in southern Britain - or wild wanderings through the wilderness areas of the Carmarthen Fans...
- Trips along forgotten tramroads offering tantalising glimpses of our recent past, or explorations of more ancient sites where our Celtic ancestors once lived and loved, worked and played, fought and worshipped...
- ...and much, much more!

The final route decision is usually made on the day, following discussion with participants.
How far will we walk? // How tough will it be?
None of our walks are feats of endurance - they are more about quality than quantity - but you will enjoy them all the more if you arrive in reasonable shape. The walks tend to get more "interesting" as the breaks progress - something worth bearing in mind if you choose to join us for only a day or so.
What will I need to bring?
That depends on the time of year, but sturdy footwear and a reasonable set of waterproofs are a must, as is a small rucksack in which to carry a packed lunch and something (non-alcoholic!) to drink. Kevin will advise you on clothing, footwear and kit when you book, and all items are available for hire at nominal rate if required.
Where can I stay?
We usually base our walking breaks at the Bear Hotel in Crickhowell, and you can find suggestions for local accommodation here. Please mention us when you book your accommodation as some providers offer our walking break clients special rates.
How many people will there be?
We believe that personal attention is very important, so we like to work with small groups. We guarantee that there will never be more than six people per guide on our walking breaks, usually less. You may even get 1:1 attention!
